Unfortunately, child abuse is still a growing problem in the world. It leaves emotional scars on children that often don’t heal over time, affecting their self-esteem when they finally become adults.

I wanted to share a couple of creative organizations out there who are willing to go that extra mile helping to rehabilitate said children across America and beyond.

Recently I enjoyed an interview with Rainn Wilson, on the Tim Ferriss podcast.  Those most familiar with Rainn will know him from his notable role as Dwight from The Office.

I was most surprised by his dedication to spreading positive and uplifting messages via Soulpancake, a company co-founded by Rainn and named one of Fast Company’s Top 10 Most Innovative Video Companies of 2015.

Rainn has also co-founded Lidè Haiti, an educational initiative in rural Haiti that uses the arts and literacy to empower and uplift women and girls who have been denied equal access to education.

Believing in the therapeutic power of arts, two women have founded Free Arts – a foundation that helps children emerge from the sadness of experiencing abuse, neglect, homelessness, and poverty.

Free Arts work exactly the same way as charities that provide aid to children in countries ravaged by poverty and war.  Instead of giving food, shelter, and education to deprived kids; Free Arts provides creative innovative art programs to children.

The organization also pairs kids with volunteers, to create sponsorship programs.  These individuals spend their free time with the kids and share what they know and act as good role models.  Children are taught art techniques while being encouraged by volunteers who help them realize that there are good people out there willing to help them through life. These pairings allow children to nurture an improved sense of self and increased self-esteem.

There are several ways to get involved in the charity.  Apart from making a one-time donation, people can organize fundraisers for the kids. Of course, people can also volunteer and give their time and effort, which is just as important as monetary donations.  Those who have come to love volunteering for the charity can also check out internships and job listings being offered by the founders.

Free Arts is a legacy organization with affiliates all over the United States.  After success in rehabilitating kids for over 15 years, the organization expanded in 1993 and has since been established in Arizona, the Northwest United States, Minnesota, and New York.

Get involved and help these children by visiting the organization’s website for more details on what you can do.

Spend time nurturing art and creativity with a child in your life today.
